Hello Parents,

I hope you are all enjoying the great fall weather. It is hard to believe that we are already approaching parent- teacher conferences next week (October 21st – October 23rd). I thought that this would be a great time to write a few pointers for you to ensure that you make the best of this very short time with your child’s teacher. Of course, the most important thing is just being there.

Before the conference, you may want to prepare a list of questions to take with you. Some examples of ques- tions you may want to know more about include: What should my child know by the end of the year? How does he or she get along with peers and staff members? What are some things that I could be doing at home to help support? You might also want to come up with some information that will help the teacher better understand your child. Share his/her strengths, weaker areas, hobbies etc.

At the conference, listen carefully to what the teacher says and feel free to take notes so you can remember points to share with your child later on. Mention your most important concerns first, in case time runs out. Re- member, if you need more time, you can always schedule another meeting at another time. Finally, be sure that you get the teacher’s contact information and find out the best way to reach him/her in the future (email, phone, note etc)

After the conference, it is important to talk with your child as soon as possible while the information is fresh in your mind. Be sure to include the compliments as well as areas to improve on. I suggest working out an action plan and identifying ways you will both check on progress. Post the action plan in his or her room and discuss it regularly.

Have a great weekend! Stephen Vance
