Dear Hough Parents,

I must admit that as much as I have been looking forward to the warm weather, this week was a little much. It’s nice to see the temperatures come back down slightly.

It has already been a very busy month here at Hough and there is a lot to look forward to in the weeks ahead. So let me get you caught up. First, I want to provide an update on the work from the Green Team and our Backyard Fieldtrip. Jane Kleiner, Per Junkerman, Nate Olson and students have been hard at work, preparing for the next project. On May 14th, from 9:00 to 1:00, the Green Team, Hough staff, and community volunteers will be creating an “Alphabet Garden”. This will be a space in our playground area (outside the kindergarten classroom) that will allow for quiet, small group gatherings and will consist of a sensory garden. The garden will replace the lawn area and will add textures, colors, and seating elements. There will also be an alphabet path with student art tiles and other accessible features for students, staff and community members. This area will allow for learning opportunities and reflection for our students to enjoy. Kudos to our Green Team for their hard work, great planning and fundrais- ing efforts. We are asking parents, students, and community mem- bers to come on out on May 14th to help out with this project. We would also like to get the word out about an event that will help raise funds for the Alphabet Garden. Please visit Yogurt Time on Main Street from 5:00-9:00 pm on Tuesday, May 17th. Yogurt Time will be donating some of their profit towards our Green Team project.

Don’t forget about our next Hough at Night (HAN) event next Tuesday. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Night this year will focus on Math. Our staff has been working hard at putting this fun night together that will consist of math games, prizes and fun. The doors will open at 6pm!! I sure hope to see you there.

I want to thank those of you who have already submitted your parent survey. If you have not yet, please make sure you submit yours by the end of April. We want to hear your thoughts on how we are doing.

Finally, the week of May 2nd will be Staff Appreciation Week. We are so very lucky to have the amazing staff we have here at Hough Ele- mentary. Their dedication, passion, and professionalism are second to none! Please take a moment during the week of May 2nd to thank your teacher, secretary, custodian, staff assistant, nurse or specialist in some special way.
